You’re A Grand Old Flag
July’s challenge using the configuration boxes allowed for lots of room to play. I chose the making of the American Flag as my theme. For the back I stitched out the words to the song “You’re A Grand Old Flag”. Stitching out your own pattern is not hard to do. First, I traced the box onto a sheet of paper and sketched off my flag. Next, I wrote the words. To make the flag easier to stitch, I copied the pattern onto velum paper and stitched directly on the paper. When finished, I just ripped off the paper (You will need tweezers to aid with this.)
My theme would not be complete if George Washington and Betsy Ross were not included. I found a commemorative stamp and photo and printed on muslin sheets of fabric. I added sewing tools to Betsy’s picture and attached George’s to foam dots and wooden blocks to give it a floating look. I covered the next two panels and the outside of the box with fabric and collage medium. The star in the middle came from a craft pick. I painted the blocks, highlighted with walnut ink and used stickles to add glitter. I used a silver pen to outline the box edge and added stars I had from a necklace. All in all I think it represents the history of the flag rather well.
